Canon has been hinting for a long time that a way to compete with Nikon, Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic’s mirrorless cameras was to make its SLR design smaller. Canon has put its cards on the table by announcing the EOS 100D/Rebel SL1.
The Rebel SL1 is billed as “the world’s smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR.” It combines the best features of the Rebel-series DSLRs with a body that is very small.
The Rebel SL1 is much smaller and lighter than the Rebel T5i, even though it has the same 18MP resolution, DIGIC 5 processor, and, presumably, image quality. This is because the internal parts have been shrunk, which has led to a smaller shutter mechanism, a thinner sensor module, and a circuit board with a smaller footprint.
In fact, the Rebel SL1 is the smallest DSLR we’ve seen so far, and it’s not too far from “SLR-style” mirrorless cameras like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5.
As impressive as the Rebel SL1’s small size is, it’s also great that Canon was able to keep most of the controls and features that are usually found on a Rebel-series camera.
Canon DSLR users will be familiar with the controls, such as the front dial and the ISO, exposure compensation, and AF/AE lock buttons. Its touchscreen has the same resolution as the ones on the Rebel T4i and T5i, but it doesn’t move.
Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF system, which was first seen in the Rebel T4i, is now in its second version in the Rebel SL1.
Canon doesn’t say anything about how much faster its hybrid phase/contrast detect system can focus, but the new version covers 80% more of the live view area than the old one. This should make it an option that is much more useful than the one on the EOS M and T4i.
