The Fujifilm GFX 50S is the first medium format digital camera that the company has made. It has a 51.4MP CMOS sensor that is 43.8 x 32.9mm and uses new G-mount lenses. It has a crop factor of 0.79x.
It has a 117-point contrast-detect autofocus system and uses the same X Processor Pro as the X-Pro2 and X-T2. For a medium format camera, the body is small and light, and it has a 3.2″ touchscreen LCD that can be moved in three directions.
An ultra-high-resolution OLED electronic viewfinder with 3.69M dots can be detached, and a separate adapter lets it tilt and turn. On top of the camera is a small LCD that shows information about the shooting. The GFX has the usual Fujifilm Film Simulation modes as well as a new Color Chrome Effect mode. It can also record up to 30 frames per second of Full HD video. There is no need for a battery grip.
With the Fujifilm GFX 50S, the company is getting into the digital medium format market. It takes the idea behind the APS-C X-series cameras and adds a bigger sensor to it. There are a lot of control points, the image quality is great, and the autofocus is accurate, but don’t expect it to focus on things that are moving.
The only thing that really keeps the GFX 50S from reaching its full potential is that (at launch) it only comes with a small number of lenses with slow maximum apertures. Still, it has the best image quality we’ve seen so far and is a very nice camera to use in general.
