The 18-month-old Fujifilm X-A3, which served as Fuji’s entry-level X-Series camera up to the introduction of the X-A10, is replaced with the new Fujifilm X-A5. We’ll continue to refer to the X-A5 as an entry-level camera out of consistency.

So what is new after 18 months? Not nearly enough, in our opinion. With a newer image processor, the sensor is an improved version of the 24.2MP APS-C sensor from the X-A3. It differs from the X-Trans sensor found in the premium X-Series cameras from Fujifilm.

With a new sensor, the native ISO range has increased by one stop to ISO 12,800 and can be increased to ISO 51,200. Because of the 1.5x faster processing speeds, there should be slight gains in image quality without breaking new ground.

The improved autofocus technology is arguably the most important upgrade on paper. With hybrid autofocus on the X-A5, you can use both contrast and phase-detection AF points. It has a 91-point array, which is more thorough than the X-A3 but simpler than those seen in high-end X-Series cameras.

The X-A5 should focus much more quickly than the X-A3, and we’ll discuss our experience in more detail later in the review.
