DJI, a company that makes drones, is rumoured to be putting out a new action camera next month, but the rumours about its features are still vague. Here’s what we know about the situation.

There are a lot of companies that make action cameras, and they all have different levels of quality and performance. DJI entered this market in May 2019 with its first action camera that was not made by GoPro, which was the leader in this niche.

This DJI product was called the Osmo Action, and it turned out to be a great choice thanks to its high-quality image stabilisation, crisp, high-quality 4K video, and user interface that many buyers liked.

Also, the Osmo Action’s front display screen layout made it a usefully compact tool for video bloggers who didn’t want to deal with the weight of a mirrorless camera while shooting video on the go.

All of these were expected from a brand that had already built its reputation as a high-quality drone maker with a well-known name. Later, when the DJI Action 2 came out in November 2021, it showed how well DJI could move into action cameras.

This camera’s modular design, which made it look like a cube, gave it a longer-than-average battery life and an even better shape for mobile vlogging.

Here come the rumours about the Action 3 camera and when it might come out. It’s getting close enough to the end of 2022 that a new camera model wouldn’t be a total surprise, and a couple of DJI product leakers on Twitter are indeed dropping hints about it.

According to a vague tweet by @OsitaLV, owners of Action 2 cameras should “prepare to sell” them. Drone development leaker @DealsDrone has been more specific, saying, “DJI Action 3 will be released in mid-September, and it looks almost the same as Osmo Action.”

The first question that comes to mind is “why?” Even so, it hasn’t even been a year since the last DJI action camera came out. Even a pretty innovative company like DJI doesn’t seem like it could add enough to a new device to make the one from last year worth getting rid of.

For now, no one has given specific details, but it’s likely that you won’t need to “sell” your Action 2 if you keep it.

Unless DJI really shocks the market with something much better, the new product that is rumoured to be coming out sounds more like a new product than an improvement.
