Fujifilm X-S10

The FUJIFILM X-S10 is a sleek and versatile mirrorless camera that is well-suited for walkaround use thanks to its large feature set and compact size. Aside from offering outstanding picture and video capabilities, the X-S10 also combines a compact form factor with the tools necessary for everyday content production.

A 26.1MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor provides high-quality still photography, as well as DCI/UHD 4K video recording at 30 frames per second with sensitivity ranging from ISO 160 to 12800. The mechanical shutter allows for continuous shooting at up to 8 frames per second. In addition to providing decreased noise and enhanced overall clarity, the BSI design of the sensor, when combined with the X-Processor 4, results in increased performance and improved responsiveness.

Additionally, the sensor’s architecture allows for a hybrid autofocus system, which combines 425 phase-detection points with a contrast-detection system to provide fast and precise AF performance. An image stabilization system with a 5 stop effective sensor-shift is also included, which can be used with practically any attached lens to lessen the appearance of camera shake in both stills and videos.

FUJIFILM cameras are renowned for their incredibly intuitive physical designs, and the X-S10 has an updated layout that allows for more seamless handling and shooting efficiency. The most noticeable change is the switch from a traditional shutter speed dial to a mode dial that can be used for a variety of shooting situations.

The X-S10 is also equipped with a brilliant 2.36 million-dot electronic viewfinder and a rear 3.0 inch 1.04 million-dot touchscreen LCD with a varied-angle design that allows it to be used from high, to low, and front-facing positions. The camera’s built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities allow it to be controlled remotely and images may be shared with other mobile devices.

With the sensor and processor from APS-C X-Trans, the camera can capture 26.1MP images.

In addition to a very flexible and reliable sensor, the X-S10 is equipped with an APS-C-format 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, which has a back-illuminated design for enhanced tone and color reproduction, increased low-light performance, and a broad native sensitivity range of ISO 160-12800.

X-Trans sensors also employ a randomized pixel array; this, together with the lack of an optical low-pass filter, allows for excellent image clarity and sharpness, as demonstrated by the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. By mimicking the organic nature of film rather than traditional pixel patterns, the X-Trans design produces more nuanced colors and tonal transitions while also eliminating moiré and other artifacts

Another feature included in the sensor design is a new phase-detection focusing system with 425 customizable points that covers almost the full sensor surface. A quicker and more accurate focusing performance is provided in a variety of lighting settings down to 6 EV with this autofocus mechanism.

The X-Processor 4, which has a quad-core CPU and delivers faster, more responsive performance throughout the camera system, allows for full-resolution 8 frames per second shooting with the mechanical shutter, 20 frames per second shooting with the electronic shutter, or 30 frames per second shooting rate with the electronic shutter and a 1.25x crop on the image.

In-Body Image Stabilization is a technique for stabilizing images within the body.

An integrated sensor-shift image stabilization system with five axes of motion compensation can assist to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to five stops. This technology is compatible with the majority of X Series lenses, including non-stabilized lenses, and provides advantages while shooting at slower shutter speeds or in challenging lighting circumstances. Additionally, 4-axis digital image stabilization may be employed during video recording to further help in the stabilizing of the film, which is very important while capturing handheld video.

Video recording in DCI and UHD 4K resolutions

In addition to still photography, the X-S10 has a diverse range of video capabilities, including internal DCI/UHD 4K recording at up to 30 frames per second and Full HD recording at up to 240 frames per second for extreme slow-motion playback.

The speed of the X-Processor 4 has a significant impact on overall video performance since it allows for faster read rates while recording video and reduces rolling shutter distortion when capturing moving objects, both of which are highly beneficial. In addition, a micro-HDMI connector allows for 10-bit 4:2:2 recording to an optional external recorder, resulting in increased image quality, and a 3.5mm microphone jack allows for more sophisticated audio recording with the camera.

Design of the Body

  • The 0.62x magnification of the high-resolution 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder allows for bright and crisp eye-level vision in low light.
  • In addition to having a touchscreen design for straightforward control and playback, the variable-angle 3.0″ 1.04m-dot LCD boasts an articulating design that notably favors working from high and low shooting angles. This variable-angle design also allows you to close the screen against the camera body, obscuring it from view and allowing you to shoot without being distracted.
  • Despite the tiny size, a big righthand grip ensures firm and steady handling for comfortable all-day use despite the compact shape.
  • The top plate is equipped with a number of physical controls, including an exposure mode dial that is devoted to that mode and two additional top dials that allow for quick and straightforward control over camera and exposure settings.
  • The rear joystick may be used for easy AF point selection and switching, as well as menu navigation and image playback, among other things.
  • The camera’s integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity allows it to be used to wirelessly share photographs with a mobile device or to remotely control the camera from a mobile device.
  • SD memory cards with up to the UHS-I speed standard can be used in a single SD card slot for quick and versatile file storage.
  • The NP-W126S battery, which is included, has a capacity of about 325 frames per charge.

Modes for Film Simulation

  • Taking use of FUJIFILM’s extensive experience with conventional film-based photography, the X-S10 incorporates a number of Film Simulation modes that replicate the appearance and feel of some of the company’s iconic film types, including:
  • Provia: A color transparency film with a standard contrast and saturation, but no special effects.
  • Velvia is a color transparency film with excellent contrast, color saturation, and vibrancy.
  • Astia has a soft contrast and color saturation, which makes it a good choice for portraiture work.
  • Classic Chrome: Produces subdued tones and rich color reproduction, akin to that of a vintage slide film, but without the grain.
  • Negative with a classic filmic sense: muted contrast yet brilliant colors with a vintage film feel
  • PRO Neg: Available in both high and standard contrast settings, this simulates the punchy-but-natural feel of their professional-grade color negative film, which is available in both high and standard contrast settings.
  • If you’re going for an authentic movie aesthetic, this will give you a flat color and low saturation look that’s ideal for post-production color grading.
  • Eterna Bleach Bypass: This feature refines the regular Eterna look by creating a higher key, higher contrast sensation while preserving the overall desaturated appearance.
  • This monochrome mode, which is based on the popular B&W film, has a particular tone and graininess, and it may be utilized in conjunction with the contrast filter effects in the Yellow, Red, and Green color channels.
  • B&W: A straightforward and basic black and white effect with the option of using contrast filters in the colors Yellow, Red, and Green.
  • Using the popular alternative technique, sepia is everyone’s favorite old-timey effect to replicate.
