The use of 4K resolution is no longer restricted to the exhibition of motion pictures in theaters; rather, it is in high demand across all stages of production. The GY-HM170 4KCAM Compact Professional Camcorder from JVC is designed to fulfill the requirement for professional functionality, such as ND filters and custom-assign buttons, in a form factor that is closer to that of a consumer camcorder. It is capable of recording in UltraHD resolution.

The camera is capable of recording at a resolution of 3840 by 2180 in either 24 or 30 frames per second at a bitrate of 150 Mbps while encoding the file with an H.264 codec that is wrapped in an a.MOV container. Dual recording, continuous recording, and backup recording are all supported by the camera, which features two card slots compatible with SDHC and SDXC. In addition to recording in 4K, it is also capable of recording in 1080p at up to 60 frames per second in either an 8-bit 4:2:2 50 Mbps.MOV file or, for compatibility with consumer editing software, in AVCHD.

There is a flip-out LCD screen with a panel that has a resolution of 920,000 pixels that may be used for monitoring, in addition to a 0.24-inch viewfinder that has a resolution of 1.56 megapixels. This latter feature is especially beneficial while working in bright sunshine. There is an HDMI connector available with live 4K output that may be used for connecting an external display, connecting a live switcher, or recording video externally.
