Sensors that are stacked together with a powerful processing engine
Sensor with 45.7-megapixel stacked BSI CMOS technology
The Z9 is powered by a newly designed 45.7MP BSI stacked CMOS sensor in FX-format, which is at the heart of the device. When working at higher sensitivity, the stacked architecture provides quick readout rates and helps to prevent rolling shutter, while the BSI design provides remarkable clarity and minimum noise when operating at lower sensitivities.
It’s also a high-resolution chip, with 45.7MP, which is beneficial for landscape, portraiture, and other detail-oriented genres, as well as for capturing video at resolutions of up to 8K, among other things. The full-frame BSI design is also noted for its outstanding color and detail reproduction, and this sensor has a native ISO range of 64-25600, which can be increased to ISO 32-102400 with an optional extension.
ADVANCED EXPEED 7 Image Processing
The sensor is complemented with a sophisticated processing engine, the EXPEED 7, which operates at speeds that are nearly ten times quicker than those of a Z 7II. With the help of the stacked sensor architecture, this engine is able to achieve extremely rapid autofocus speeds, burst shooting rates, a large buffer capacity, smooth video performance, and speedy all-around handling.
Continuous shooting rates of up to 20 frames per second when shooting in raw, 30 frames per second while shooting in JPEG, and an astonishing 120 frames per second when recording 11MP stills are all possible, and all rates are supported with complete AF/AE performance.
It is capable of buffering over 1000 raw photos in a single burst, which means that raw image sequences may be captured continuously for around 50 seconds. Additionally, you can go to the first shot of a particular burst during playback to accelerate the on-camera review process.

Pre-Release Capture makes it simpler to capture critical moments in action by recording frames in a burst for up to a second before actually releasing the camera’s shutter button. When this function is enabled, burst shooting will begin as soon as the shutter is half-pressed, and the buffer will hold up to a second’s worth of shots until the shutter is fully depressed.
The electronic shutter has a maximum shutter speed of 1/32,000 sec, which allows you to operate in the brightest situations while using larger apertures.
Because of the stacked sensor architecture, rolling shutter distortion is reduced, allowing subjects that move quickly, such as a golf club, tennis racket, or baseball bat, to seem undistorted even when working with shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 sec.
To keep up with the rapid continuous shooting speeds, AF calculations are performed at a rate of 120 frames per second.
Nikon Z9 Motion Burst is a high-speed burst camera.
The new High-Efficiency RAW file format retains image quality comparable to that of uncompressed raw files while reducing file sizes by roughly 30% to allow for speedier reading and writing to memory cards and other storage devices.
This function may be used to create an in-camera composite that displays a succession of subject motions inside a single frame by using the Motion Blend Retouch tool.
Enhancements to the Long Exposure display have been included with Firmware 2.0 and feature a live exposure timer on the back LCD and the ability to darken the viewfinder to further maintain your night-adjusted vision in low light conditions.
Design with only an electronic shutter
The Z9 totally forgoes the use of a mechanical shutter in favor of an electronic shutter for all capture modes, relying instead on the speed and stacking construction of the sensor to do this. The high speed of the sensor allows for recording at speeds of up to 1/32,000 sec, and the layered construction eliminates motion distortion, allowing for a realistic portrayal of fast-moving things such as golf clubs, baseball bats, and vehicles to be captured.
Aside from that, despite the lack of a mechanical shutter, flash sync speeds of up to 1/200 sec., as well as high-speed sync features, are still supported.
It is also possible for the Z9 to function fully silently by disabling the mechanical shutter, and there is no need to be concerned about mechanical shutter wear or breakage. AF with 493 Phase-Detection Points

Custom Wide Area Modes for the Nikon Z9.
The Nikon Z9 also marks the first time that the 3D Tracking mode has been included in a Nikon mirrorless camera. When used in conjunction with subject recognition, this popular focusing option from Nikon’s DSLRs is able to latch onto rapid, irregularly moving subjects that move parallel and perpendicular to the camera’s sensor.
Additionally, there are three Dynamic-Area AF settings, each with a different focus area size, for catching a wide range of moving subjects, including birds, animals, and people.
Wide-Area AF selection patterns have been added to Firmware 2.0, with 12 of them being supported during video recording. These patterns allow for more precise autofocus and subject identification inside a specific area of the frame and are available in 20 different variations.
Recording at resolutions of up to 8K is supported.
In addition to its high-end picture capabilities, the Z9 is Nikon’s most competent video camera, with a choice of resolutions and frame rates up to 8K available in a number of configurations. Using complete pixel readout, UHD 8K 30p video may be shot, with continuous filming being achievable for around 2 hours and 5 minutes at maximum resolution.
A full-frame 4K recording option is also available, with a maximum resolution of 120p for slow-motion playback. Oversampled UHD 4K recording at up to 60p is achievable with an 8K area, resulting in greater sharpness and clarity when compared to standard 4K recording. Additionally, high-resolution frame grabs may be recorded in-camera from 8K and 4K recordings, resulting in still images with resolutions of 33MP and 11MP, respectively.
N-RAW and ProRes RAW videos are recorded internally.
The Z9 now has internal 12-bit raw recording at up to 8.3K 60p in the N-RAW format, which was added with Firmware 2.0, as well as compatibility for ProRes RAW recording, which was previously unavailable. The raw recording provides more tonal and color freedom, as well as increased dynamic range, which is beneficial for color grading requirements and post-production flexibility.
Photographers who use Nikon’s raw recording format, N-RAW, will notice that the file sizes are far less than those of other raw formats. N-RAW also has the capability of creating MP4 proxies for more efficient previewing and transferring.

Additionally, ProRes RAW recording is possible at resolutions of up to 4.1K and 60p.
Internal recording in ProRes and H.265 10-bit resolution
Depending on the workflow requirements, internal recording with 10-bit color and 4:2:2 sampling is available in the ProRes HQ and H.265 codecs, while H.264 and 4:2:0 color can also be utilized in the ProRes 422 HQ codec. There is also a 10-bit N-Log mode, as well as a flat color profile, for those who prefer more freedom when color grading in post-production.
Additionally, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) may be utilized to create HDR-ready material directly from the camera, which can save time and money.

Fine ISO control is available in Manual mode, allowing for exposure adjustments in 1/6-stop increments.

For working in extremely low-light circumstances or for generating purposefully blurred effects, slow shutter speed video (slower than 1/frame rate) is enabled.
