Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera Review

Canon has long suggested that a smaller version of its classic SLR design may be used to compete with mirrorless cameras from Nikon, Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic. This has been a long-standing rumor. Canon has put its cards on the table with the unveiling of the EOS 100D / Rebel SL1 digital SLR camera. The Canon Rebel SL1 is billed as “the world’s smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR,” and it brazenly combines the DSLR operating trademarks of the Rebel series with an extremely compact body.

The Rebel SL1 is significantly smaller and lighter than the co-announced Rebel T5i, thanks to the downsizing of internal components that has resulted in a smaller shutter mechanism, thinner sensor module, and smaller-footprint circuit board, while offering the same 18MP resolution, DIGIC 5 processor, and, presumably, image quality. In fact, the Rebel SL1 is comfortably the smallest DSLR we’ve seen yet, and it’s not that far off from ‘SLR-style’ mirrorless devices such as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5 in terms of size.

As eye-catching as the Rebel SL1’s compact footprint is, what’s equally surprising is that Canon has been able to preserve the majority of the controls and functions that are generally available on a Rebel-series camera while keeping the camera’s overall size down.

There are a number of features that will be recognizable to Canon DSLR users, including a front dial and dedicated ISO, exposure compensation, and autofocus/autoexposure buttons. Its touchscreen has the same resolution as the Rebel T4i and T5i, however, it is fixed rather than articulated, unlike the Rebel T4i and T5i.

Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF technology, which was first seen in the Rebel T4i, is now available in version two of the Rebel SL1 camera. While Canon makes no promises regarding the hybrid phase/contrast-detect system’s focus speed enhancements, the new version covers a substantially larger amount of the live view area than the previous model (80 percent of the area). The version featured on the EOS M and T4i, on the other hand, should be a substantially more helpful alternative as a result.
