The OM System OM-5 seems to be coming out in September. It will have a stacked sensor and can shoot at 15 frames per second.

The next camera from Olympus should be the OM System OM-5, which will be made by OM Digital Solutions, which now owns the camera division of Olympus. We already know a lot about the new body thanks to leaks, like when it will be released, what sensor it will have, and even some of the AF tricks it will have.

Even though the OM System OM-5 would be the third post-Olympus camera from the new owners, after the new flagship OM System OM-1 and the Olympus PEN E-P7, it would be the first one to drop the famous brand name. The manufacturer confirmed that the OM-1 was the last camera to have “Olympus” on the pentaprism, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the original Olympus OM-1 film camera.

As you might expect, the OM System OM-5 would replace the great Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III, just as the OM-1 replaced the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III and Olympus OM-D E-M1X as the top model.

What do we know so far about the OM-5?

The OM System OM-5’s first leaks of information have been posted on the site 43 Rumors, which has a pretty good track record when it comes to spec leaks.

The news source says that the new camera will have the same stacked 20.4MP image sensor as the OM-1. But while the flagship can shoot at up to 120fps, the site says the OM-5 will only be able to shoot at 15fps. This is the same top speed as the E-M5 Mark III (when not shooting in Pro Capture, where it hits 30fps).

This would help keep the two lines from competing with each other. Before, Olympus had trouble telling the difference between the midrange E-M5 and the professional E-M1 lines. But since the Panasonic GH6 has a higher resolution (25.2MP), the OM-5 might lose a little ground to its competitor.

Still, the site says that the OM-5 will have AI subject tracking, which was previously only available in the top-of-the-line E-M1/OM-1 line. Still, if the rumor that the OM-5 will only have one card slot is true, the OM-1 will still be the best choice for pros.

43 Rumors also say that the OM-5 will use the same BLX-1 battery as the OM-1. This is great for unifying production, but not so great for E-M5 users who want to upgrade (who already had to change battery types from the Mark II to the Mark III).

When will OM System OM-5 come out?

People say that the OM System OM-5 will be announced in September 2022, and shipping will start in October.

This would be another step away from the E-usual M5’s February release date, which is when the original camera and the Mark II came out. The E-M5 Mark III came out in November 2019.
