The Nikon D40 is a brand-new, reasonably priced, small point-and-shoot digital SLR from Nikon that replaces the D50 while offering somewhat different features and a lower price point.
The biggest news, though, is probably that Nikon refrained from going after more megapixels (yay! ), and instead seems to have focused on what makes a good camera, such as a good viewfinder, a fast shutter lag, and a brief viewfinder blackout.
Some of the “less important features” have been cut (you can’t modify the exposure steps, for instance), but a number of new capabilities, including custom Auto ISO, which we appreciated with the D80, have been crammed in.
